Utilizing Talented Players

In the Central Michigan game, we saw former linebacker converted into defensive end Lawrence Thomas get significant playing time at fullback, and after the game, Mark Dantonio said that Thomas is “too good not to play– whether that be tight end, whether that be fullback, whether that be defensive end.” in this article.

Here’s the interview with Mark Dantonio where he talks about Lawrence Thomas and more (about the 3:00 mark):

After seeing Thomas do so well at fullback, I was really pleased with Mark Dantonio. Thomas was so far down the depth chart at defensive end behind Will Gholston, Marcus Rush, Joel Heath,  and Shilique Calhoun that he wasn’t getting any playing time, and for such a talented player like him, he can’t be thrown away. Putting him at fullback was a great idea.

Thinking about that also made me think about Denzel Drone, the Tight End converted from a Defensive End. Where has he been?

Well, according to multiple sites Drone has not been a success story on offense, so MSU is trying to move him over to defensive end over the next couple of weeks. I was never a big fan of such a talented end moving to the other side of the ball, and all of my worries came true.

Hopefully Drone can regain his talents at defensive end and make up for time lost very quickly.
