Derrick Nix’s Future In Jeopardy

According to Joe Rexrode of the LSJ on his blog Hey Joe, Derrick Nix was arrested at 12:20 AM this morning with possession of marijuana. After hearing this earlier this afternoon, we all knew this would be bad, and now Izzo made his comments through Matt Larson:

Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain. He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy.

Boom. His future with our program is in serious jeopardy. Ouch. Not good at all for this team, and especially not for Derrick Nix.

What does this mean for the program? Well, assuming Nix is out for a lengthy amount of time- or, gulp, forever- our game down low will suffer. Nix and Payne split time this past year because Nix’s stamina isn’t good and Payne has undersized lungs. Payne will need to play more minutes this year, which will be hard for him to do.

Also, Nix was the best candidate to become the successor to Draymond Green as captain of the Spartans, and now even if he comes back he most likely won’t get that role. The Spartans won’t have a set leader, which will be detrimental to the team’s morale.
